Tributes Pour in for Keri Fui: A Tragic Loss in the Boxing World (2025)

A tragic loss has shaken the boxing world, leaving a void in the hearts of those who knew and loved Keri Fui. Justis Huni, a heavyweight boxer and a close ally of Fui, has expressed his heartfelt grief over the sudden passing of his mentor and friend.

Fui, recently appointed as Huni's head trainer, suffered a fatal heart attack during a training session last week. Despite immediate medical attention from Huni and his strength coach, Fui never regained consciousness and passed away, leaving a profound impact on the boxing community.

"The pain is indescribable, and it feels surreal," Huni shared on social media. "Kez, my friend, my brother, I will forever carry your memory with me. Until we meet again, my big buddy."

Fui's presence extended beyond the boxing ring; he was an integral part of the Tasman Fighters stable, where he worked closely with world champion Jai Opetaia. Fran Bradford, the logistics chief of Tasman Fighters, described Fui as more than just a coach—he was family.

"Keri had an incredible ability to unite people, lift their spirits, and bring joy to every moment," Bradford said. "He was always the first to offer help, dropping everything to support those he cared about. His wisdom, energy, and passion for boxing, his family, and the people around him were unparalleled."

Fui's impact extended beyond the boxing arena; he travelled the world with the Tasman Fighters team, sharing their journeys, triumphs, and challenges. His unwavering support and guidance will be deeply missed.

"Keri truly had our backs through every storm. We'll miss his laughter, his wise counsel, and his vibrant energy every single day," Bradford added.

As the boxing world mourns Fui's passing, Huni prepares for his upcoming rematch with Kiki Leutele on December 6 on the Gold Coast. Meanwhile, Opetaia will defend his IBF and The Ring cruiserweight titles against Huseyin Cinkara on the same card.

Huni's journey has been marked by both triumphs and setbacks. He recently suffered his first professional loss against Fabio Wardley in England, fighting on short notice with an elbow injury that prevented him from proper sparring. Despite the underdog status, Huni dominated the fight until the tenth round, when Wardley landed a devastating knockout punch.

"After my fight with Fabio, my reputation soared," Huni reflected. "And then, unfortunately, seeing Parker get stopped, my stocks went up even further."

Wardley's impressive performance has since earned him a shot at the undisputed heavyweight champion, Oleksandr Usyk.

As Huni navigates the aftermath of his loss, he has parted ways with his previous trainer, Mark Wilson. The boxer is now focused on his upcoming rematch and paying tribute to his late mentor, Keri Fui.

"Keri's legacy will live on through the lives he touched and the impact he had on those around him," Huni said. "His spirit will guide me in the ring and beyond."

And this is where it gets interesting... With Huni's career at a crossroads, will he rise again and honor Fui's memory with a victorious return? Or will the weight of his loss and the absence of his mentor prove too much? The boxing world awaits with bated breath.

What do you think? Will Huni's tribute to Fui fuel his comeback, or will the emotional toll be too great? Share your thoughts in the comments!
