In a world torn by conflict, the quest for peace remains a beacon of hope. The final day of the Pax Christi International Conference in Florence was a powerful reminder of this, as attendees delved into the lives of inspiring figures and charted a course for a more just future. But here's where it gets truly inspiring: the day began with a deeply moving spiritual reflection led by the USA delegates, who shared the stories of remarkable Peace Workers, some of whom are on the path to Beatification. These individuals, born into circumstances marked by slavery, racial hatred, and adversity, emerged as beacons of faith, hope, and love, dedicating their lives to serving others.
Among these luminaries were Venerable Pierre Toussaint, a Haitian-born philanthropist who founded numerous Catholic works despite his enslaved beginnings; Venerable Mother Mary Elizabeth Lange, a Caribbean native and the pioneering foundress of the Oblate Sisters of Providence; Venerable Henrietta Delille, whose unwavering commitment to the Gospel led her to serve the needy in New Orleans amidst racial prejudice; Venerable Fr. Augustus Tolton, the first African American Roman Catholic priest, celebrated for his eloquence and musical talent; Servant of God Julia Greeley, a former slave whose deep devotion to the Sacred Heart inspired many; Servant of God Sr. Thea Bowman, revered as a holy woman for her faith and service; and Servant of God Friar Martin de Porres Maria Ward, who dedicated his life to the poor in Brazil.
And this is the part most people miss: the conference wasn’t just about honoring the past; it was about shaping the future. The fifth session focused on crafting regional strategies for peace, justice, and human rights across Africa, the Americas, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and the Middle East. Pax Christi’s global advocacy is deeply interconnected, yet it recognizes the unique challenges and opportunities of each region. Attendees engaged in thoughtful discussions, planning joint initiatives to address these complexities.
Session Six evaluated the effectiveness of Pax Christi International’s working groups, highlighting three key priorities: Just Peace in the Holy Land, Disarmament and Integral Human Security, and Climate Justice and Energy Transition from a Peacebuilding Approach. Working Group members shared insights, assessed campaigns, and strategized for greater impact, ensuring their efforts resonate with both the public and policymakers.
The day culminated in a beautiful Mass celebrated by Bishop Marc Stegner, President of Pax Christi International, and Auxiliary Bishop of El Paso. The liturgy, a harmonious blend of Latin, Spanish, Italian, and English, underscored the movement’s global unity.
But here's where it gets controversial: the Pax Christi International Peace Award, established in 1988, honored Bishop Mark Seitz of El Paso and his team for their tireless work with migrants on the Mexican border. While their efforts are undeniably heroic, the issue of migration remains a divisive topic globally. Does their work challenge us to rethink our own attitudes toward borders and humanity? The award was accepted by Bishop Tony Celino, with co-workers like Melisa, Dylan Corbett of the Hope Border Institute, Annunciation House, and Marisa Limon Garza of the Immigration Advocacy Centre also recognized. Melisa’s heartfelt words captured the essence of their mission: “Every single person served is served with love.”
The ceremony was a poignant reminder of the power of compassion in action, leaving attendees inspired and humbled.
