Don Don Donki, the popular Japanese supermarket chain, has just opened a new outlet in Paya Lebar Quarter (PLQ), on Level 4 of PLQ Mall. The more exciting news may be that this outlet comes with a dine-in food hall. The new Don Don Donki Food Hall @ PLQ Mall is a pleasant and convenient space for customers to indulge in both the prepare to order dishes of the food court stalls as well as food items from the supermarket.
Don Don Donki Food Hall @ PLQ Mall
Don Don Donki Food Hall @ PLQ Mall is not within the supermarket but the main entrance of the supermarket and the checkout area are just separated from the food hall by the mall corridor space.
The food hall is simply furnished yet it has the distinct atmosphere of a Japanese eatery. Don’t expect soothing background music. What you will get is the Don Don Donki jingle on loop.
It can easily accommodate approximately 80 customers at a time. There are booth seats, bar counter seats and regular dining tables. It can be suitable for a solo diner, a small family or a large office lunch group.
One of the good things about Don Don Donki Food Hall @ PLQ Mall is that you can also enjoy food and drinks purchased from the Don Don Donki supermarket in the food hall.
The food hall is a self-service establishment. You order and pay at the cashier and collect your food when prompted by the electronic buzzer. You are expected to return your tray and clear your own table.
There are 4 main stalls in Don Don Donki Food Hall in PLQ – offering yaki soba, octopus ball, sandwiches, sushi and sashimi as well as beverages.
Teppan Yaki Soba
Teppan Yaki Soba at PLQ offers a few varieties of yaki soba, a delicious Japanese dish that consists of stir-fried noodles.
We tried the Plain Omelet Sauce Yaki Soba ($7.90). The thick noodles were fried with vegetables. They had a nice smokey taste. The omelet was fluffy. The best part of the dish was the yaki soba sauce – a sweet and savoury sauce which made everything taste better.
Fried Octopus Ball
For those looking for some Japanese street food, there’s a stall dedicated to Fried Octopus Ball. The tantalizing treat, also known as takoyaki, has a crispy exterior and a soft center. It can be a light snack or taken as a side dish item.
Furu Furu
Alongside hot and cold sandwich options, Furu Furu also serves a selection of cakes and desserts.
Furu Furu is also the drinks stall. It offers latte, americano and beer as well.
We had their machine-made Americano ($2.20), which was not bad.
Sen Sen
Sen Sen is Don Don Donki’s made-to-order sushi concept. It has a rather extensive menu and offers affordably priced set meals.
It has a rather big kitchen. You can see the chefs at work through the big glass panels.
Below are pictures of a few pages of Sen Sen’s menu and the ordering chit, which should give you a fair idea of what the stall offers.
We tried one of their Sushi & Sashimi Sets – the Sake Lovers ($16.80). It was nicely presented and consisted of 5 pieces of fairly thick cuts of salmon sashimi, 3 pieces of nigiri and 4 pieces of maki.
The sushi & sashimi set looked good and the taste did not disappoint. Obviously, it would not be like dining at the posh Nobu, but for less than the price of 2 pieces of Nobu tuna tacos, we had a very satisfying sushi and sashimi meal at Don Don Donki.
Convenient Dining Space
Whether you are taking a break from shopping or looking for an affordable dining option in PLQ Mall, Don Don Donki Food Hall will be a good destination. It provides a comfortable and convenient space for anyone (or anyone who doesn’t mind too much hearing the Don Don Donki on repeat) looking for a drink, a quick bite or a good affordable Japanese meal.
