Mavericks' GM Nico Harrison Fired: The Fallout from the Luka Dončić Trade (2025)

The Dallas Mavericks' bold gamble to trade Luka Dončić has backfired spectacularly, leading to the firing of General Manager Nico Harrison. This move, made just nine months after the controversial trade, has sent shockwaves through the NBA, transforming a potential championship contender into a struggling team. But what went wrong? Let's dive in.

Nico Harrison's tenure as Mavericks' GM came to an abrupt end on Tuesday. His most significant decision, trading Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers last February, has proven to be a major misstep. This trade, intended to reshape the league's power dynamics, instead plunged the Mavericks into disarray, with Harrison's choices often becoming the subject of ridicule.

Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont, acknowledging the team's disappointing performance, which saw them at 3-8 and in 14th place in the Western Conference, made the decision to dismiss the 52-year-old former Nike executive. The team's offensive struggles are evident, ranking 29th in the NBA in scoring, a stark contrast to their previous top-10 finishes during Dončić's tenure.

"This decision reflects our continued commitment to building a championship-caliber organization, one that delivers for our players, our partners, and most importantly, our fans," Dumont stated, attempting to reassure the fanbase.

Matt Riccardi and Michael Finley will temporarily take over as co-interim GMs while the team searches for a permanent replacement.

The Trade's Aftermath

The trade centered around Anthony Davis, who the Mavericks acquired from the Lakers on February 1st. Despite Davis being six years older than Dončić and having a history of injuries, Harrison defended the move amidst widespread criticism.

"If you pair him with Kyrie (Irving) and the rest of the guys, he fits with our time frame to win now and in the future," Harrison said in February. "The future to me is three, four years from now. Ten years from now, I don’t know. They’ll probably bury me and J (Mavericks coach Jason Kidd) by then. Or we bury ourselves."

The fan reaction was immediate and harsh. Mavericks fans protested outside the American Airlines Center the morning after the trade, even holding a mock funeral. Inside the arena, chants of "Fire Nico" began in February and continued even after the team miraculously won the NBA Draft Lottery, securing the No. 1 pick to draft Cooper Flagg. These chants echoed during the team's draft party in June.

The team's loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday proved to be the final straw. Even as P.J. Washington was at the free-throw line with 1.2 seconds left, fans continued their chants, a clear sign of their discontent. Washington missed crucial free throws, and Dallas lost 116-114.

By Tuesday morning, Harrison's termination was all but confirmed.

Injuries and Setbacks

The trade's timing was particularly unfortunate. Davis was recovering from an abdominal strain at the time. In his first game with the team, he suffered a left adductor strain, sidelining him for six weeks. Shortly after, Irving sustained a season-ending ACL tear.

In July, the Mavericks brought in D'Angelo Russell as a temporary solution in the backcourt. Harrison seemed optimistic, but he and coach Jason Kidd had different views on Russell's impact. Kidd initially brought Russell off the bench for the first eight games of the season. Russell only became a starter after a home loss to the New Orleans Pelicans on November 5th, which dropped the Mavericks to 2-6.

Further complications arose when Davis suffered a left calf strain on October 29th, adding to the team's woes. This injury occurred after he arrived at training camp weighing 268 pounds, 15 pounds heavier than his listed weight the previous season. Ironically, Dončić was traded while recovering from a left calf strain.

The Road Ahead

Harrison's departure leaves Dallas in a precarious position. While they have a promising player in Flagg, they lack control over their first-round picks from 2027 to 2030 due to trades made to bolster the roster around Dončić.

The question is, was the trade worth it? The Mavericks had reached the NBA Finals in 2024, but Harrison's decision to trade the player most crucial to their championship aspirations, just months after that breakthrough, has significantly altered their trajectory.

On Monday night, Dumont was seen talking with a teenager wearing Dončić's Lakers jersey. The fan, Nicholas Dickason, said Dumont expressed remorse for the trade, acknowledging his desire to make amends to the fans.
