In a historic moment, Antonio Fuoco has etched his name in the annals of Macau racing by claiming the inaugural Super Pole for the FIA GT World Cup. This achievement places him at the forefront of the grid for Saturday's Qualification Race, alongside his AF Corse teammate Yifei Ye, who will be piloting the Ferrari 296 GT3. But here's where it gets controversial... the untried format introduced for this event has sparked excitement and debate.
The usual 30-minute Qualifying Q1 session set the stage, followed by the new Qualifying Q2 for the top 10 drivers. With a fresh set of Pirelli tires, each driver faced a thrilling one-at-a-time shootout on Macau's iconic street track. Fuoco's Super Pole time of 2m15.535s not only secured him the top spot but also shattered the existing Macau GT lap record set by Daniel Serra in 2023.
"I'm a huge fan of this format," Fuoco shared. "It's all about extracting the maximum potential from your car in just two laps. We pulled off an exceptional job, and being at the forefront here in Macau is a significant achievement. We know the weekend is far from over with two races ahead, but starting from this position gives us a real advantage for tomorrow."
Edoardo Mortara, known as "Mr. Macau" for his impressive seven overall race wins in the Special Administrative Region of China, added his own excitement: "The Super Pole lap I just did might be the best I've ever done in my 20 years of racing here. I took every risk, hitting barriers left and right, and it paid off! I'm still shaking from that adrenaline-fueled lap!"
However, not everyone had a smooth ride. Sheldon van der Linde, who was favored to challenge for the Super Pole, unfortunately crashed during Q1, leaving the South African BMW driver out of the running.
But the drama doesn't end there! In addition to the FIA GT World Cup, the 72nd Macau Grand Prix week features three other FIA-sanctioned categories: the FIA FR World Cup, the FIA F4 World Cup, and the Kumho FIA TCR World Tour. Each of these categories has its own unique story to tell, and the competition is fierce.
In the FIA FR World Cup, Théophile Naël from KCMG ENYA Pinnacle Motorsport secured pole position for the Qualification Race, edging out Freddie Slater of SJM Theodore Prema Racing. Meanwhile, Evan Giltaire of ART Grand Prix started from third position.
"Qualifying 2 didn't go as planned initially," Naël admitted. "But the track conditions improved, and I managed to push my lap time and overall performance. It was a tricky situation with the red flags, but we maintained our position and created a gap for the push."
Moving on to the FIA F4 World Cup, 16-year-old Sebastian Wheldon claimed pole position for the Qualification Race with a best lap time of 2m24.148s, narrowly beating Kean Nakamura-Berta by 0.136s. Emanuele Olivieri from Italy completed the top three, followed by Thomas Bearman and local hero Tiago Golovko Rodrigues.
"FP1 was a learning curve for me," Wheldon shared. "I had to familiarize myself with the track, but FP2 went much better. In qualifying, I pushed myself to the limit and managed to set my fastest lap before the red flags. It's a zero-margin-for-error situation, especially in qualifying. We're starting from the best position for tomorrow, but it's a long way to the first real corner."
In the Kumho FIA TCR World Tour, Néstor Girolami secured his first pole position of the season, outpacing his title rivals Yann Ehrlacher and Thed Björk of Lynk & Co Cyan Racing. Girolami's impressive performance earned him 15 points for BRC Hyundai N Squadra Corse.
