GNV and Lloyd's Register Join Forces to Accelerate Decarbonization Training
In a significant step towards a greener future, GNV, an Italian ferry operator, has partnered with Lloyd's Register (LR) to launch the third edition of its fleet energy efficiency and decarbonization training program. This initiative, held at the MSC Training Centre in Sant'Agnello, Sorrento, Italy, from November 10-12, 2025, marks a pivotal moment in the maritime industry's transition to sustainable practices.
The three-day course, attended by approximately 50 technical and operational staff, including captains, chief engineers, and deck officers, focused on enhancing energy management skills, promoting the use of alternative fuels, and implementing digital tools for consumption monitoring and regulatory compliance. The training was jointly developed by GNV's Energy Efficiency Department and LR's technical experts, covering international and EU regulatory frameworks, operational best practices, onboard efficiency technologies, and strategies for adopting low-emission fuels like biofuels and LNG.
The program's curriculum included theoretical sessions, workshops, and practical activities based on data analysis and performance monitoring systems. The final day featured presentations from industry leaders, including Wärtsilä, Hempel, VARD Fincantieri Group, KROHNE, RINA Digital Solutions, and TRADER s.r.l. Worldwide Bunkers & Lubricants Supplier, who discussed emerging technologies, new energy scenarios, and digital solutions to enhance the environmental performance of shipping operations. LR's Legal Representative and Country Leader for Italy, Gianpaolo Dalla Vedova, and Senior Client Relation Manager, Antonio Pollio, also participated in the session.
This training initiative is a cornerstone of GNV's strategy to reduce its environmental footprint through technology upgrades, refitting activities, and crew development. By supporting an integrated energy management approach and compliance with IMO and EU regulations, GNV aims to lead the maritime sector towards a more sustainable future. Ivana Melillo, Energy Efficiency Director at GNV, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, 'Investing in crew training is a commitment to our people and a step towards decarbonization. It empowers our team to address new regulatory and operational challenges with greater awareness and innovation.'
Gianpaolo Dalla Vedova, Strategic Business Partner, Country Leader, and Legal Representative for Italy at LR, highlighted the partnership's significance, 'Our collaboration with GNV exemplifies LR's dedication to supporting maritime operators with tailored services and consultancy in energy management, digitalization, and alternative fuel adoption. This training program is designed to navigate the complex regulatory landscape and accelerate the decarbonization journey for shipowners and operators.'
As the maritime industry continues to embrace sustainability, GNV and Lloyd's Register's partnership sets a precedent for comprehensive training and innovation, paving the way for a greener and more efficient future in shipping.
