I love a one skein project, especially when the yarn is self striping. I had a single Caron Cake sitting on my yarn shelf and thought it would look great as a scarf made using a simple v-stitch. I chose to let the colour transition happen naturally but you might choose to cut and rejoin the yarn in a more natural place, such as the beginning of a row.
This pattern uses only one stitch throughout so it’s an easy one to put down and pick up again. My testers told me they found relaxing and enjoyable to work on which is always great in a project.

Notes:
– This pattern is written in US terms (find a stitch conversion chart here)
– The finished scarf measures approximately 64 inches long and 7 inches wide
– Gauge is: rows 1-8 (4 inches in height, 7 inches wide)
– Turning CH 2 counts as a stitch throughout
– Special stitch tutorial is included within the pattern
– This project can be made as a traditional scarf or turned into an infinity scarf by seaming the two ends together
– You can easily make your scarf longer or shorter by adding/decreasing the number of rows. Please keep in mind this will affect the yardage amount
– When working with Caron Cakes, you might prefer to let the colour transitions happen naturally throughout the project. You can also choose to cut and rejoin the yarn for a more natural colour change at the beginning of rows
Materials Needed:
– Approximately 370 yards of worsted weight yarn. I used Yarnspirations Caron Cakes in the “Red Velvet” colourway
– 5mm hook (this hook set is so cute!)
– Yarn needle
– Scissors (these are my favourite)
– Measuring tape (a retractable one is handy)
Stitches:
CH – Chain
SK – Skip Stitch
SS – Slip Stitch
DC – Double Crochet
Special Stitch Tutorial:
Modified Double Crochet V Stitch – Traditionally, the V stitch is worked as 1 DC, CH 1, 1 DC (all into one stitch). The modified version in this pattern is made by placing 2DC together into one stitch (without the CH 1 between them). The modified V stitches in the rows that follow are made within the stitch space between the 2 DC that are grouped together in previous row.
Pattern:
Begin with CH 25
Row 1:
Into the 5th CH from your hook, place 2 DC. SK the next stitch. *In the next stitch, place 2 DC, SK the next stitch*. Repeat from * to * 8 more times. Place 1 DC into the last stitch. CH 2 and turn [photo A].
(10 V stitches, one CH 2 [at the beginning], 1 DC stitch [at the end])
Rows 2-119:
For this row and each row after, you will only be working your v stitch into the space between the 2 DC that are grouped together [photo B].
SK the first DC and place 2 DC between the SK stitch and the next stitch. *SK the next 2 DC and place 2 DC into the next space between stitches*. Repeat from * to * 8 more times. SK the last DC stitch and place 1 DC into the top of the turning CH 2 from the previous row. CH 2 and turn for all rows except after row 119. When row 119 is complete, fasten off and weave in all ends.
