My favorite part of the holidays is gettingtogether with my family, sharing memories and traditions with my boys, and making new memories as a family. The holiday season is a time for family, giving, gifts, and food but it can also be a time of waste.

I was surprised to learn as a whole, we generate an extra 5 million tons of household waste each year between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, including three times as much food waste as other times of the year. Sadly, the average American family throws out approximately 25% of the food they buy. I know this is pretty accurate in my life, and I want to do my part to lower that number.

One of my goals with my holiday menu planning this year is to prepare dishes that are not only going to be enjoyed by everyone, but can be prepped at least partially in advance, and that reduce waste.

And the result of this goal: Decadent cinnamon butter glazed candied sweet potato rounds. They’re smothered in a smooth and creamy cinnamon honey butter that can double as a spread for homemade rolls, then topped with crunchy pecans, and the classic candied yam ingredient—marshmallows. They take only a few minutes in the oven day of, leaving precious oven time for other sides and the main attraction, and are always a favorite. We rarely have leftovers as they tend to get gobbled up.

But if they don’t, I’m prepared to properly store them to eat later, with Glad® Food Storage Protection Products. We always go a little overboard at Thanksgiving and other holidays with the food. A variety of sides and main dishes, as well as desserts are part of what makes the holiday fun.

This year I’m going to plan ahead so we don’t have too much, use what we do have, have the right tools to properly store leftovers so they don’t get wasted, and do as much of the prep work in advance so I can enjoy the festivities.

Food waste is a global issue that impacts food security, the environment, and economy. I’m trying to be a bit more conscious this year, starting with how I buy, prep, and store food. Planning my menu, shopping list, and cooking schedule help me stay on track so I can be with my family when it counts. It also means getting what I need, and not buying things we don’t. A quick inventory of the fridge and pantry, and cross-referencing this with what I need for my holiday menu significantly reduces waste.

These delicious yam rounds are the perfect food to implement my plan with. I can do half the prep-work ahead of time, by cooking and storing in GladWare®, and by mixing up the cinnamon honey butter and saving it in the fridge, then right before dinner, I can bake at 500 degrees for 10 minutes.

You can do the same thing with the gravy, make ahead and freeze, cranberries too! They have enough sugar they’re a quick jam and can be kept in an airtight GladWare® until the big day!

Not only does preparing some of the food in advance give me time on the big day for family and loved ones, taking small steps to prep and protect food as soon as you buy it can help you save money, time, and the environment. Proper protection and storage helps food stay good longer, and can help to eliminate food waste.
